Melissa Foti to be a State Director for Women's Bar Association
We are pleased to announce that Melissa A. Foti, one of KSLN's distinguished associates, has been named as one of The women's Bar Association's New York State Directors for the Western New York Chapter.
Congratulations are in order for our own Shari Jo Reich on being nominated as a finalist for the 2008 Who's Who in Law. Shari Jo was selected by her peers in the legal community in the Matrimonial/Family categories. Shari Jo said, "It's a true honor to be nominated by my peers." She added that he is very thankful for the recognition of her work. "It could not have happened without the support and encouragement from everyone here at Kenney, Shelton, Liptak & Nowak." The ballot results will be featured in the September 4th edition of the Buffalo Law Journal and the September 5th edition of Business First. Good luck Shari Jo!
Thomas E. Liptak, one of our distinguished Equity Partners, has been appointed as Vice-Chair of the Law Practice Management General Committee. Tom's appointment will begin on the last day of the 2008 American Bar Association Meeting later this year in New York City. The Vice-Chair position will be within the Tort Trial & Insurance Section, or TIPS. A leadership position within the organization is awarded on outstanding professional abilities and reputation. TIPS has over 36,000 members, from which Tom was selected. The position is for the 2008-2009 fiscal year ending on the last day of the ABA meeting in Chicago, IL later next year.
KSLN Attorney Wins Auto Case
On November 8, 2007, Megan Szeliga, an attorney with Kenney Shelton Liptak Nowak (KSLN) obtained Summary Judgment in a significant auto accident case. (A motion for summary judgment is typically brought before a Court prior to trial in an attempt to demonstrate that a trial is not warranted based upon the facts of the case.)
Tom Liptak was quoted in the October 25, 2007 issue of The Buffalo Law Journal in an article addressing the fact that More Insurers Are Opting For Staff Counsel. Tom noted that companies may hire auditors to review and scrutinize bills from their outside counsel. He said the "The overall philosophy is, carriers want defense counsel to get more creative in bringing resolution to more cases because it saves the carrier substantial time and reduces the risk for both sides." He emphasized that, "You have to have something to offer to your clients that sets you apart from the competition."

On March 13, Gov. Eliot Spitzer signed into law sweeping legislation that will change the makeup of the Workers’ Compensation system in New York state. The most significant measure of the reform bill creates a 12-tier system of classifications for permanent partial disability.

Coverage Group Obtains Summary Judgment in Late Notice Suit

Brian A. MacDonald scored a recent trial victory before a Monroe County jury. In this action, a customer service agent for AirTran Airways, allegedly injured his back while operating a baggage conveyor system at the Rochester Greater International Airport.
