In the 2008 New York Super Lawyers Upstate Edition,
our own Managing Partner, Patrick S. Kenney, Equity Partner, Judith
Treger Shelton and Family Law Partner, Shari Jo Reich, made the list of
upstate Super Lawyers! Shari Jo was also listed in "Who's Who in Law"
from Business First and The Buffalo Law Journal. Pat
was selected for the Civil Litigation Defense category, Judi for the
Insurance Coverage category and Shari Jo for the Family Law category.
According to William C. White, Publisher of The New York Super Lawyers Publication,
each nominee is checked and qualified based on "12 indicators of peer
recognition and achievement." The final list comprises attorneys with

Pat Kenney Talks About KSLN's Expansion Into Albany, NY
In the August 29th edition of the Buffalo Law Journal and the September 5th edition of Buffalo Business First,
Kenney, Shelton, Liptak, Nowak's Managing Partner, Pat Kenney, spoke
about the firm's plans to open an Albany, NY office. In the article, Expanding Buffalo firms hope to fill Albany 'void' for clients,
Pat addresses the core position of the article saying the decision to
open an office in the Capital region "just makes complete business
sense." Albany has grown as an attractive market for the insurance
coverage industry in recent years. Pat went on to say, "We're opening
an Albany office because we have insurance carriers telling us we have
a void in this area." The Albany office, slated to be open in
September, will be KSLN's fifth location in addition to Buffalo,
Corning, New York City and Rochester.
Melissa Foti to be a State Director for Women's Bar Association
We are pleased to announce that Melissa A. Foti, one of KSLN's
distinguished associates, has been named as one of The women's Bar
Association's New York State Directors for the Western New York
Chapter.
Congratulations
are in order for our own Shari Jo Reich on being nominated as a
finalist for the 2008 Who's Who in Law. Shari Jo was selected by her
peers in the legal community in the Matrimonial/Family
categories. Shari Jo said, "It's a true honor to be nominated by
my peers." She added that she is very thankful for the
recognition of her work. "It could not have happened without the
support and encouragement from everyone here at Kenney, Shelton, Liptak
& Nowak." The ballot results will be featured in the September 4th edition of the Buffalo Law Journal and the September 5th edition of Business First. Good luck Shari Jo!
Thomas E. Liptak, one of our distinguished Equity Partners, has
been appointed as Vice-Chair of the Law Practice Management General
Committee. Tom's appointment will begin on the last day of the 2008
American Bar Association Meeting later this year in New York City. The
Vice-Chair position will be within the Tort Trial & Insurance
Section, or TIPS. A leadership position within the organization is
awarded on outstanding professional abilities and reputation.
TIPS has over 36,000 members, from which Tom was selected. The position
is for the 2008-2009 fiscal year ending on the last day of the ABA
meeting in Chicago, IL later next year.
KSLN Attorney Wins Auto Case
On
November 8, 2007, a Kenney Shelton Liptak
Nowak (KSLN) attorney obtained Summary Judgment in a significant auto accident
case. (A motion for summary judgment is typically brought before a
Court prior to trial in an attempt to demonstrate that a trial is not
warranted based upon the facts of the case.)
Tom Liptak was quoted in the October 25, 2007 issue of The Buffalo Law Journal in an article addressing the fact that More Insurers Are Opting For Staff Counsel.
Tom noted that companies may hire auditors to review and scrutinize
bills from their outside counsel. He said the "The overall philosophy
is, carriers want defense counsel to get more creative in bringing
resolution to more cases because it saves the carrier substantial time
and reduces the risk for both sides." He emphasized that, "You have to
have something to offer to your clients that sets you apart from the
competition."
James Nowak in National Law Journal
James Nowak was quoted extensively in the September 24, 2007 issue of
The National Law Journal on the increase in asbestos litigation.
KSLN ATTORNEY AUTHORS ARTICLE ON WORKERS' COMPENSATION
On
March 13, Gov. Eliot Spitzer signed into law sweeping legislation that
will change the makeup of the Workers’ Compensation system in New York
state. The most significant measure of the reform bill creates a 12-tier system of classifications for permanent partial disability.

Coverage Group Obtains Summary Judgment in Late Notice Suit
KSLN's
coverage group recently won summary judgment for its client in a late
notice dispute in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of
New York.
Brian
A. MacDonald scored a recent trial victory before a Monroe County jury.
In this action, a customer service agent for AirTran Airways, allegedly
injured his back while operating a baggage conveyor system at the
Rochester Greater International Airport.
Melissa A. Foti Elected to New York State and Erie County Bar Positions
Melissa
A. Foti was recently elected to serve as Board Member for The Western
New York Chapter of the New York State Women's Bar Association. Ms.
Foti will also serve as Co-chair for The Young Lawyers Committee of the
Erie County Bar Association.
Liptak Elected President of The Buffalo Ski Club, Inc.
Thomas
E. Liptak was recently elected President of The Buffalo Ski Club, Inc.,
one of the largest private ski areas in the country, with more than 600
member families from Western and Central NY.
