KSLN Welcomes Seven New Associates
KSLN is pleased to announce that seven new associates have joined the firm in the Insurance Defense and Trucking & Transportation practice areas. We welcome Brianna D. Carroll, Karl E. Daniel, Kristen V. Elmore, Kayla E. Leonard, Elaina R. Marino, and Lauren Wardynski to our Buffalo office, and Alexander J. Douglas to our Rochester location.

Brianna D. Carroll is a member of the firm’s Self-Insured and Insurance Defense Litigation group. Her practice includes all aspects of the litigation process including discovery, motion practice, trial and appeals support. Prior to attending law school at Ohio Northern University Pettit College of Law, she graduated from Roanoke College with Bachelor’s Degree in History.
Karl E. Daniel was born and raised in Buffalo, NY and attended high school at St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute. After graduating in 2012, Karl attended Canisius College and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in history. In 2019, Karl earned his Juris Doctor from St. Thomas University School of Law in Miami, Florida.
Karl joined KSLN as an Associate in 2019 and is active within all of the firm’s practice areas, most commonly handling matters involving self-insured and insurance defense litigation. Prior to joining KSLN, he gained considerable experience in all areas of civil litigation while working as a law clerk in the Miami, Florida area.
Alexander J. Douglas joined KSLN in 2019 as an Associate in the Insurance Defense Group. With several years of experience in complex federal litigation, Alex mostly handles matters involving insurance defense litigation.
Alex is a native of the Rochester area. After growing up in Chili, New York, he attended college at the University at Buffalo, graduating summa cum laude in the Advanced Honors Program. Alex then enrolled in Cornell Law School. While in law school, he advised the Big Red Venture Fund, a venture capital fund run by MBA students and professors. Alex also worked as a General Editor on the Cornell International Law Journal. During his first-year summer, he interned for the Hon. Michael A. Telesca, U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York.
Kristen V. Elmore is a proud native of Buffalo, New York. After completing her undergraduate degree in communications from the State University of New York at Brockport, she worked as a student activities coordinator at SUNY Erie Community College.
She later attended law school at the University of Missouri School of Law in Columbia, Missouri. While pursuing her law degree, she simultaneously studied media and was an assistant teacher for undergraduate courses in the Missouri School of Journalism. Her topics of interest were cross cultural communication, digital multimedia, and media law. She also worked for the general counsel of the statewide University system, focusing on litigation surrounding traumatic brain injury safety standards in college football.
Kristen returned to Western New York after graduating and has had experience in personal injury as a plaintiff’s attorney before becoming interested in insurance defense.
Kayla E. Leonard joined KSLN in 2019 and practices primarily in the firm’s insurance defense department. Prior to joining KSLN, Kayla practiced at another local law firm in plaintiff’s personal injury, where she spent most of her time focusing on car accident cases, premises liability, and Labor Law cases. With experience on both sides, Kayla brings a unique and valuable perspective to the litigation files that she handles.
A native of Buffalo, New York, Kayla attended D’Youville College where she earned her Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude in Sociology and English. In 2014, Kayla was awarded the Sociology Major of the Year by the College for her commitment to the department and field of Sociology. After spending a few years working as a paralegal for a small immigration law firm, Kayla enrolled at the University at Buffalo, School of Law where she earned her J.D., cum laude, in 2018. During her time in law school, Kayla served as Outreach Coordinator for the school’s public interest program and was a member of the Sports and Entertainment Law student group. Kayla was also a Student Attorney with the Mediation Clinic, where she assisted in the resolution of various small claims and landlord/tenant matters in local town courtrooms. Kayla went on to win the school’s mediation competition and competed in the Representation in Mediation competition at Fordham University in Manhattan. Kayla also acted as a volunteer law clerk with the New York State Unified Court System in the Hon. Thomas Franczyk’s chambers.
Elaina R. Marino joined KSLN in 2019 as an attorney pending admission working primarily in the Insurance Defense Litigation Group and Trucking Defense Group. She works extensively in all aspects of defense litigation especially involving the firms growing number of trucking cases.
Prior to attending law school, Elaina graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from SUNY Geneseo in 2016 majoring in Political Science and minoring in History. Elaina earned her JD from Syracuse University College of Law. During law school she founded the Syracuse Chapter of the Mindfulness in the Law Society (MILS). From 2018 to 2019 she served as the National Mindfulness in the Law Society’s National Student Chair managing and forming 25 law school chapters across the country. She spoke about mindfulness practices at law schools at the National Association of Law Student Affairs Professionals Conference (June 2018) and National Mindfulness Conference endorsed by the ABA (August 2018).
Elaina has also had the distinct pleasure of serving as both a Research Assistant to Associate Dean and David M. Levy L'48 Professor of Law, Nina Kohn and Teaching Assistant to Teaching Professor of Law, Andrew Greenberg. Additionally, she clerked for the Hon. Emilio Colaiacovo, New York, Supreme Court, Erie County.
Lauren Wardynski joined KSLN in 2018 as a law clerk. She is now an associate in the Self-Insured and Insurance Defense Litigation Group. Lauren is active within all of the firm’s practice areas, though she most commonly handles matters involving self-insured and insurance defense litigation, labor law, medical, dental, and professional malpractice defense litigation, and business and corporate law.
Lauren attended law school at SUNY Buffalo School of Law and SUNY Buffalo School of Management, receiving both her J.D. and M.B.A. Prior to law and business school, Lauren earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Hobart and William Smith, majoring in Economics, Public Policy, and Political Science.
